Zebra Bow Hunt, by Frank Berbuir

In my travels and hunting safaris to southern Africa, I never hunted or shot a zebra. This time, end of August 2023 it was on my bucket list. I arrived at the beautiful farm of Carlo Engelbrecht Safaris near Paulpietersburg in the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa and was welcomed with a hot and strong South African coffee.  The next day we had interesting game drives and inspected the several elevated and pit bowhunting blinds. Carlo Engelbrecht Safaris is well prepared and equipped for bowhunters. That evening, we concealed ourselves in a tent blind nestled in a rock formation, to hunt a bushpig, another species on my bucket list, but that is another story. We heard them, but for some reason they did not come in. Probably it was the changing wind or the approaching rain and thunderstorm. Luckily, we decided to leave the blind once we heard the lightning

Bushpig with Bow and Arrow, by Frank Berbuir

South Africa 2023 I remember well my first bowhunt on bushpig in South Africa in 2016. It was a new experience and a challenge for me to hunt a nocturnal animal. During the first night I was a bit nervous when a boar and a sow came to the feeding ground, and I fiddled with my peep and sight to place it on the correct vital spot of the pig. In the end, I missed, and the pigs dashed off. The reason was that I had looked beside the peep and not through it. Bad preparation. The next night I put some glowing liquid on it from a fluorescent stick that I used for fishing. Luckily, the boar and sow came to the corn plot again and I was able to take the male under the rheostat red light. Unfortunately, we could not find it during the night and the

Shades of Africa, by Amanda Lynn Mayhew

Recently three friends and I, Rae, Erika, and Shannon, set out on a bowhunting safari in the heart of the South African wilderness, wanting to challenge ourselves in the untamed beauty of the landscape. The daily explorations, close encounters and successful harvests provided an exhilarating adventure that proved to be the experience of a lifetime for each of us. Our bond as women, and as hunters, grew increasingly stronger as we immersed ourselves in the travel, vibrant cultures, and bountiful hunts. En route, in London, we marveled at the grandeur of Buckingham Palace, explored the historic Tower of London, and braved the local taxis. The city’s rich history fascinated us as we wandered the ancient streets, imagining the stories of those who had walked there centuries ago. Then we flew to Johannesburg, where our true adventure began. On the way to camp, with our senses heightened and hearts pounding, our
